When you mix all the holiday decorations with pets, you may find that many accidents can happen. It is important to keep your pets safe from the many things that can cause them harm. You need to know what can hurt your pets so that you can keep the animals out of harms way. The following are some of the holiday decorations that can be dangerous to your pets:

  • Tinsel – Cats and dogs do not understand that tinsel is meant to be looked and to give the Christmas tree a shimmering glow. They merely see a pretty “toy” for them to play with. Cats in particular are mesmerized by the tinsel and may ingest it. If you plan on putting tinsel on your tree, keep your pets out of the room the Christmas tree is in to avoid choking or ingestion that can make your pet very ill.
  • Live Plants – Many of the live Christmas plants such as poinsettias can be harmful to your pets if they eat it. Make sure to keep your Christmas plants up and out of the accessibility of your pets. This way you can still have cheerful live plants without putting your pets at risk.
  • Christmas Tree – The Christmas tree itself can be harmful to a pet. They do not understand that it has decorations that can break and cut them. Large dogs in particular may knock the tree over when you are not supervising them so if you are not at home, keep your pets out of the room the tree is located. This helps you to avoid any accidents such as knocking off ornaments or in the worse case scenario, knocking the entire tree over.
  • Candles and Oils – It seems as though we spend more money on making our house smell good than any other time of the year. While it is nice for us humans, pets do not understand the dangers. They can knock over an oil burner or candle and cause serious injuries from burns. Keep these great smelling additions in an area that the pets cannot get to.

It is not difficult to keep your pets safe during the holidays if you pay attention to the small details. While you may want to have your pets in the tree area while you are celebrating, if you are not home to watch them, you need to keep them out of the room. This is not only to protect your tree and other decorations, but to keep your pets safe.
