There are many holiday hazards for pets that you may not even realize can be harmful. Many of the common holiday items that are fine for humans to be around can be life or health threatening to our furry friends. There is no need to put any animal at risk simply because we celebrate a holiday that they really do not understand. The following are some common holiday hazards for pets to watch out for:

  • Candy – Candy is not good for pets at any time of the year but during the holidays some pet owners can become more lax about what they feed their pets. You should never offer your dog or cat any treats that are not made specifically for them. If you want to treat them, then buy them an extra rawhide or an expensive dog or cat food that they can eat instead. Any sugars, and in particular, chocolates, can be very dangerous or even deadly.
  • Burns – When you are cooking, your pets may want to be in the kitchen with you. The problem with this is that they can pull hot pans off the stove if you are not very attentive. You also want to make sure that you keep any candles or other hot decorations out of the reach of your pets so that they do not knock them over and burn themselves. This can also lead to a house fire so you need to make sure these are not in any area that the pet may be roaming.
  • Glass Decorations – Just as with burns, it is important to keep any decorations that are made out of glass away from the high pet traffic areas. If a pet were to knock these over, not only would they break, but also they can also cut and severely injure the pet. Ornaments on the tree should never be hung at a level that a dog’s tail or a cat can reach. They can knock these off the tree and if they are valuable or precious to you, they can be broken.

While there are many holiday hazards for pets, if you are conscientious, you can keep your much-loved pets free from harm. Just make sure that there are no decorations or anything that is low enough to cause them harm and do not feed them any sweets and your pet can endure the holiday easily.
