Not all Christmas decorations are safe for every member of the family including your pets. The good news is that you can decorate your home in a manner that is safe for your pets and that do not cost you an arm and a leg. By simply keeping a few hints in mind, your pet does not have to be put at risk just so your home can look good. The following are some hints for a successful Christmas with your pets:

  • The Tree – There are two hints for the Christmas tree. First, keep the water that any live tree is placed covered so the pets cannot drink from it. One way to avoid this is to invest in one of the many beautiful artificial trees that do not need to have water added to them. Also, you want to keep any of the breakable ornaments from the bottom of the tree or do not use ornaments on the bottom at all. If you must, use your plastic ornaments on the bottom so if a cat or a dog’s tail knocks them off they cannot break and cut them.
  • Lights – The major problem with the holidays is there are so many lights around the inside and the outside of the home. Pets love to chew on the wires and that can cause electrocution. Keep all wires out of the reach of the pets or use wire covers to keep them hidden. This means that the pet cannot get to them to hurt themselves.
  • Presents – If at all possible, do not put any presents under the tree until Christmas Eve. This avoids the pets ripping into them when you are not at home. The ribbons can be choked on and it would be a great disappointment to the family to come home and find that the gifts are damaged or destroyed. Put them in a closet where the pet cannot get to them until they are ready to be opened.

Having a pet friendly Christmas is not difficult if you pay attention to the small details. It does not take much work to keep your pets and decorations safe. Just make sure that there are no wires or chords that can be chewed and that the Christmas tree does not have any breakable low ornaments. Do not let your pets drink the Christmas tree water and if possible use an artificial tree that does not require watering.
